Enrollment Timeline for 2016-17 Academic Year

Open Enrollment: November 5-16, 2015

Students in grades 8 through 11 applying for the 2016-17 school year may submit an application online, www.herronhighschool.org,  or submit a hard copy of the application at Herron High School, during the Open Enrollment period. Each student who submits a complete application during Open Enrollment is given an equal chance of admission.

Lottery (if applicable): December 4, 2015

If more applications are received during Open Enrollment than available spaces in the freshmen class, a public lottery will be held. The time and location of the lottery will be announced on our website and posted in the weekly newsletter. If a lottery is necessary, only applications received during Open Enrollment will be included.

Acceptance Letters Mailed: December 2, 2015 or Post-Lottery

Acceptance letters will be mailed on December 2, 2015, to all students who submitted an application during Open Enrollment. If more applications are received than spots available, and a lottery is conducted, acceptance letters will be mailed within one week of the lottery.  Acceptance is contingent on meeting the enrollment deadlines for paperwork (see deadlines subhead below) and on the successful completion of all 8th grade core courses.

Deadlines for Enrollment Paperwork: January 29, 2016 and July 1, 2016

Enrollment is contingent upon receipt of the following items to the enrollment office by January 29, 2016 for those students applying for 9th grade:

  • Complete middle school transcript, including 1st semester of 8th grade,
  • Middle school ISTEP/IMAST or other standardized testing scores and ECA scores, if Algebra I has been completed
  • Copy of birth certificate
  • Up-to-date immunization records
  • by July 1, 2016: Complete transcript, including second semester grades – demonstrating the student has been promoted to 9th grade – and 8th grade ISTEP and ECA test scores, as well as attendance reports and disciplinary reports.

Also, if you receive special education services, please send the most recent copy of your IEP or 504 AND Psychological Evaluation so our team can work to create appropriate accommodations.

Any applicant who misses these deadlines will default their spot, unless an extension is approved by the Herron High School Director of Enrollment Services

Placement Exam:

Sat. March 19 from 9:30-11 a.m. OR  Thurs. April 14 from 5-6:30 p.m.

All incoming freshmen must take a placement exam before scheduling their courses. If deemed necessary, based on placement exam results, a student may be required to participate in Herron High School’s Summer Academe program. Those who do not participate in Summer Academe will default their space in the freshmen class.

 Freshmen Course Selection: Saturday, May 21, 2016; 8 a.m. 1:00 p.m.

All freshmen, and parents/guardians, should attend course selection Saturday. A course selection worksheet will be sent to each student’s home along with a letter detailing the assigned time at which to arrive in order to alleviate long lines.

Ongoing Applications and Waitlist

Applications may be submitted through the beginning of September 2016, and applicants will be offered spots in the appropriate class as space allows. If a particular class is full, applications will be added to the waitlist until there is an opening in that class. Complete enrollment will not be fulfilled until the applicants file is complete. (See required documentation below.)

Sibling/Staff Preference

Applicants of Herron High School staff members and siblings of Herron High School students are given preference during Open Enrollment and are excluded from the lottery in the event one is required. After the close of Open Enrollment, siblings and children of staff members will be subject to all enrollment policies established for new families, including the lottery process.
