International Opportunities

Herron High School's long-standing student exchange program is an excellent way for our scholars to experience life in a new culture. Since 2010, scholars have been traveling to Tlaxcala, Mexico, studying at Instituto Independencia, immersed in the Spanish language, living with host families, and attending school with their host student.

As a result of participating in these exchange programs, Herron High School scholars gain confidence and proficiency in another language, and get a taste of the world beyond Indiana and the United States. Ten to 14 students are chosen each year to travel to Tlaxcala for two weeks and then have the opportunity to host their foreign exchange student for two weeks at their own homes.

Students who want to further study the Spanish language can also apply to participate in a semester exchange through Instituto Independencia. All coursework is in Spanish, and scholars are expected to keep up with their coursework at Herron High School in addition to their other Mexican classes.

In September 2016, the Herron High School Advanced Choir traveled to Tlaxcala and performed around Central Mexico. Since its inception, this program has exchanged more than 100 students.
