Welcome to the Herron Classical Schools Technology webpage. This page serves as a central resource for technology information, requirements, policies, forms, and support.
Herron Classical Schools follows a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. Students are expected to bring a personal laptop, Chromebook, or iPad with a physical keyboard to school each day. The device should meet the school’s technology requirements and be ready for classroom use.
A limited number of school-owned rental devices are available for families who are unable to provide a device. A parent or guardian must complete the required rental agreement and request process before a device can be issued. Rental availability is limited and is not guaranteed.
Please review the tabs below to find answers to your technology questions, including device requirements, rental information, student and family responsibilities, fees, policies, forms, account access, and technical support.
RENT
HCS Rental Technology Reminders
HCS devices are assigned to individual students and may not be shared with another student.
All HCS devices and assigned accessories must be returned at the end of the school year or by the return date communicated by the school.
Devices must be returned immediately if a student withdraws, is expelled, or is no longer enrolled at Herron Classical Schools.
Failure to return a school-owned rental device will result in a $550 replacement fee being charged to the student’s account and may affect the student’s ability to rent or use HCS technology in the future.
Action Required:
- A guardian must submit the Technology Rental Agreement .
- Devices will be distributed to students directly throughout the first week of school.

TECHNOLOGY POLICY
1. Purpose and Scope
This policy applies whenever a high school student is issued, borrows, checks out, handles, or uses technology owned, leased, or managed by Herron Classical Schools (HCS). It covers rental devices, classroom and in-class devices, loaners, testing devices, Chromebooks, laptops, iPads, chargers, keyboards, cases, sleeves, hotspots, cables, adapters, and all other HCS technology or accessories. It also applies to HCS student accounts, networks, internet access, and approved digital services.
Use of any HCS technology is a privilege, not a personal ownership right. Students and families are responsible for reading and following this policy, the HCS Acceptable Use Policy, testing rules, the Student Handbook, and all staff directions.
2. Ownership, Administrative Control, and Monitoring
All devices, accounts, chargers, protective equipment, accessories, data, and related systems remain under HCS ownership or administrative control. HCS may inspect, monitor, locate, filter, manage, restrict, lock, disable, reset, wipe, repair, reimage, or reassign school technology at any time, consistent with law and school policy.
- Students should not expect privacy when using an HCS device, account, network, or digital service. Internet activity, account activity, files, communications, and device status may be reviewed when permitted by law and policy.
- Security, filtering, device-management, anti-theft, and location tools may remain active on and off campus.
- Students may not disable, evade, interfere with, or attempt to defeat any management, filtering, monitoring, security, or location feature.
- HCS may immediately recover or disable any device that is missing, unreturned, used by an unauthorized person, or involved in a suspected policy violation.
3. Required Care and Handling
- Use only the device assigned or checked out to you. Never trade, lend, sell, hide, or allow another person to use it.
- Keep the device in your possession while it is checked out. A device found unattended may be collected and returned to the Student Help Desk.
- Keep food, drinks, liquids, cosmetics, and other materials that could damage the device away from it.
- Carry the device carefully, close the lid gently, and never place objects between the screen and keyboard. Do not throw, slam, sit on, step on, stack heavy items on, or leave a device on the floor.
- Keep the issued protective case, outer shell, and identifying labels in place. Do not remove or exchange cases or device parts.
- Use only school-approved or manufacturer-compatible chargers and accessories. Do not force cables into ports or use damaged charging equipment.
- Do not attempt repairs, open the device, remove screws or keys, disconnect internal parts, or take the device to an outside repair provider.
NO STICKERS, WRITING, OR DECORATION. At no time may a student place stickers, decals, tape, adhesive, drawings, writing, paint, ink, engraving, or any other decoration on an HCS computer, tablet, case, outer shell, sleeve, charger, or accessory. Students may not remove, cover, alter, or damage an asset tag, serial-number label, barcode, school label, or security marking. Any violation will result in suspension or loss of the privilege to rent or use HCS technology and may result in a cleaning, removal, repair, case-replacement, or full replacement charge.
4. Acceptable and Prohibited Use
Students must use HCS technology for legitimate schoolwork and other activities specifically authorized by a teacher or administrator.
- Use another person's account, share passwords, allow another person to use your credentials, or attempt to view or change another person's files, messages, or settings.
- Install unauthorized software, apps, games, browser extensions, profiles, operating systems, or storage devices.
- Use a VPN, proxy, hotspot, alternate browser, private network, developer mode, factory reset, powerwash, or any other method to bypass HCS filtering, monitoring, access limits, or administrative settings.
- Access, create, store, display, transmit, or distribute threatening, harassing, discriminatory, obscene, sexually explicit, illegal, or otherwise prohibited content.
- Use technology to bully, impersonate, threaten, embarrass, intimidate, cheat, disrupt instruction, or interfere with another person's learning, account, device, or network access.
- Photograph, record, livestream, or post a student, staff member, class, meeting, screen, conversation, or school incident without authorization. Recording is strictly prohibited in restrooms, locker rooms, testing areas, and any other private or restricted space.
- Use unauthorized websites, communication tools, notes, artificial intelligence tools, or outside assistance for assignments or assessments. Students must follow each teacher's directions and all academic-integrity rules.
- Attempt to gain elevated access, scan the network, introduce malware, misuse commands or scripts, or exploit a security weakness. Suspected security problems must be reported, not tested or shared.
- Connect unauthorized personal equipment, storage media, adapters, or charging devices to HCS technology or use a personal device to bypass HCS restrictions.
5. Rules by Device Type and Use
Rental, Classroom, Day-Use, and Loaner Technology
- The student is responsible for the device and every issued accessory from the time it is received until it is checked in and accepted by HCS staff.
- Rental, classroom, day-use, summer-program, and loaner devices must remain on campus unless an authorized administrator gives explicit written permission for off-campus use.
- Return the correct device, charger, case, keyboard, sleeve, hotspot, and all other assigned accessories by the end of the class period, school day, rental period, testing session, program, or other stated deadline.
- A student may not keep a device because it was previously assigned, used during another class, or left in the student's possession by mistake.
- Found or unassigned technology must be turned in immediately. Possessing or using another student's device without permission may result in disciplinary action and loss of technology privileges.
Testing Technology
- Use only the assigned testing device, approved testing application, and authorized testing materials.
- Do not open other websites, apps, files, messaging tools, notes, artificial intelligence tools, or communication services during testing unless the test administrator expressly allows it.
- Do not photograph, record, copy, screen-capture, transmit, discuss, or post secure test questions, prompts, answers, screens, access codes, or testing materials.
- Do not change device settings, disconnect management tools, use unauthorized accessories, or communicate with another person during testing.
- Testing violations may result in removal from the testing session, invalidation of work or scores, disciplinary action, financial responsibility for damage, and loss of technology privileges.
Authorized Off-Campus Use
- Off-campus use is allowed only for the approved student, purpose, and time period. The device may not be shared with siblings, friends, or any other person.
- Store and transport the device in a secure location. Never leave it visible or unattended in a vehicle, public place, or unsecured area.
- Filtering, monitoring, management, security, and location tools remain active off campus. Home or public internet service does not remove HCS rules.
- Return the device fully charged, with every accessory, immediately when the approval period ends or whenever HCS requests it.
6. Reporting Damage, Loss, Theft, or Security Concerns
REPORT WITHIN 24 HOURS. All damage, loss, theft, misuse, missing accessories, malfunctions, account concerns, and unusual device behavior must be reported to the Student Help Desk within 24 hours. Loss or theft must be reported immediately to the Student Help Desk Coordinator and the Dean of Students.
- Stop using a device if it is unsafe, overheating, wet, swollen, cracked, sparking, or otherwise likely to cause additional damage.
- Do not hide damage, continue using a device in a way that worsens damage, exchange the damaged device with another device, or attempt a repair.
- Delayed or incomplete reporting may delay a replacement and may result in full financial responsibility when the delay causes additional damage or prevents recovery.
- If a device is stolen off campus, HCS may require the family to cooperate with recovery steps or provide supporting documentation.
7. Student and Parent/Guardian Responsibilities
Student Responsibilities
- Follow this policy, the HCS Acceptable Use Policy, testing rules, the Student Handbook, and every staff direction.
- Protect the device, account, charger, case, and accessories assigned or loaned to the student.
- Bring authorized take-home devices to school fully charged and ready for use.
- Report problems honestly and within the required timeline, and cooperate with inspection, recovery, repair, and return procedures.
- Return all HCS technology immediately upon request, at the end of the approved use period, before withdrawal or transfer, or by any published collection deadline.
Parent/Guardian Responsibilities
- Review this policy with the student and reinforce HCS technology rules.
- When off-campus use is authorized, provide reasonable supervision and a secure location for use and storage.
- Notify HCS promptly about damage, loss, theft, misuse, or account concerns and cooperate with return and recovery procedures.
- Return all devices and accessories when requested and pay applicable repair or replacement fees assessed under this policy.
8. HCS Responsibilities
- Provide instructional, rental, loaner, classroom, and testing technology as available and appropriate for school programs.
- Use age-appropriate filtering, device management, security, and monitoring systems consistent with applicable requirements.
- Provide technical support, inspection, and repair through authorized HCS staff or service providers.
- Cover normal wear and tear and hardware failure not caused by misuse, neglect, unauthorized alteration, or intentional damage.
- Determine whether equipment will be repaired or replaced and calculate final charges based on the type and extent of damage and the actual cost to HCS.
9. Damage, Loss, and Replacement Fees
Families may be charged when technology is lost, stolen, unreturned, damaged, altered, decorated, or made unusable because of neglect, misuse, intentional conduct, unauthorized repair, or failure to follow this policy. Normal wear and tear and hardware failure not caused by misuse are not charged to the family.

Additional Charges and Determinations
- Lost, stolen, unreturned, or unrecoverable equipment may be charged at the full replacement cost.
- Intentional damage, tampering, removal of identifying labels, unauthorized modification, or an attempted outside repair may result in the full repair or replacement cost, up to $550, as well as disciplinary action and loss of future rental or use privileges.
- Stickers, drawings, writing, tape, adhesive, paint, ink, engraving, residue, or other decoration may result in a cleaning or removal charge, the cost of a replacement case or outer shell, or the full device replacement cost when the item cannot be restored.
- Missing or damaged cases, outer shells, sleeves, hotspots, cables, adapters, and other accessories may be charged at HCS's actual repair or replacement cost.
- Failure to report damage, loss, or theft within 24 hours may result in additional charges when the delay causes further damage, prevents recovery, or increases the repair or replacement cost.
- HCS makes the final determination regarding normal wear, repairability, replacement, and the amount charged after inspecting the equipment.
10. Consequences and Loss of Technology Privileges
A violation may result in one or more consequences based on the seriousness, intent, safety risk, testing impact, damage, prior history, and the student's cooperation. HCS is not required to apply consequences in a specific order.
- Immediate collection, inspection, restriction, remote disablement, or reassignment of the device.
- Temporary or permanent suspension of the privilege to rent, borrow, check out, or independently use HCS technology.
- Restricted account, network, application, or internet access.
- Required supervised technology use or another HCS-determined instructional or testing arrangement.
- Parent/guardian notification, administrative conference, and disciplinary action under the Student Handbook.
- Financial responsibility for cleaning, recovery, repair, missing accessories, case or outer-shell replacement, or full device replacement.
- Referral for further investigation when conduct may involve theft, threats, illegal activity, unauthorized access, or a serious security or testing violation.
PRIVILEGES MAY BE REVOKED IMMEDIATELY. Intentional damage, stickers or drawings, removal or covering of asset tags, unauthorized possession of another student's device, refusal to return equipment, attempted security bypass, account misuse, or a testing-integrity violation may result in immediate loss of rental and technology-use privileges.
11. Return, Acknowledgment, and Support
All HCS technology and assigned accessories must be returned immediately upon request, by the stated deadline, at the end of a class, school day, rental period, testing session, special program, or authorized off-campus period, and before the student withdraws, transfers, graduates, or otherwise leaves HCS.
Unreturned equipment may be remotely disabled, treated as lost, charged at full replacement cost, and referred for administrative follow-up. Students with unreturned equipment may be denied future rental or use of HCS technology. By using HCS technology, the student and parent/guardian acknowledge this policy. Questions, reports, and support requests should be directed to the HCS Student Help Desk or school administration.
